You will be fascinated by the extensive and colourful history of North Sulawesi. There are some excellent museums and we will also take you on walking tours around the historically and culturally significant places and describe the history….. from traditional Minahasan culture through the Colonial period and into the 20th Century and Indonesian Independence. For most of it’s history Manado, being in the northern most part of the “Spice Islands”, was a vibrant multicultural hub for trade to SE Asia, Philippines, China and Japan. Manado was a bustling trading port populated by people of all these nationalities. As ships started to get larger, the deeper port of Bitung on the east coast was expanded and during the 1920’s Japanese craftsmen moved to Bitung and contributed greatly to the boat building and fishing industries there.
If History is your thing, you will not fail to find this area fascinating! We recommend that you read the North Sulawesi Wikipedia page before arriving.
